Back in my apartment I pop a
zoomer and order a club sandwich. Brian reads out my messages, several from the
agency about bookings, and then a familiar voice.
‘Honey call me’
I sit bolt upright
‘Brian play that last message
again.’
Yes it was her voice, Veronica. I
don’t know what to do. I can’t call her without a call sign, which I don’t
have. Or have I?
‘Brian is there a return code with
that message?’
‘There is a code attached to it,
but not one that makes any sense.’
‘Try me.’
‘It goes c7 f#7 b-7 e-7 a-7 d7 g7 d-7 g7’
I go over to the piano and play
the chords. The sequence is familiar, I try another key, then I have it. The
symbols represent chords, and this particular sequence is, the chords under the
tune “Only Trust Your Heart” written
by Sammy Cahn.
I play it to the end in the style
of Oscar Peterson, then I ask Brian to record it and put it on loop. If I’ve
been bugged like I suspect, Veronica or more likely the IGBI will pick up the
sounds. Until they do, I decide to have a soak in the hot tub and relax a bit,
I have a feeling I will need all my strength soon.
